What does living with a husband or wife and keeping the Sabbath have in common? In a marriage, the couple must spend time together if their relationship is to grow stronger. In the same way, the Christian will find that our relationship with God is casual and shallow unless we spend time with Him. The Sabbath is intended to provide that time—time to grow and deepen our relationship with God. But merely spending time together is not enough. The time must be spent meaningfully, in a genuine desire, willingness, and effort to make the experience so. We must learn to “fellowship” with God. The Sabbath can be a delightful appointment, a treasured time spent with God. And as we spend that time, our thoughts and actions will begin to reflect the Company we keep.
